Halloween Mummy Hot Dogs

What you need

These Halloween mummy hot dogs wrap juicy frankfurters in flaky crescent strips so they look like little bandaged mummies. Candy eyes and a quick spiderweb dip turn a five-ingredient party snack into the Halloween appetiser everyone reaches for first.

For the mummy dogs:

  • 1 can (8 oz / 226g) refrigerated crescent dough sheet or rolls
  • 10 hot dogs (beef, pork, or turkey)
  • 2 slices American or cheddar cheese, cut into thin strips (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 20 candy eyes, or mustard dots for eyes

For the spiderweb dip (optional):

  • 120ml ketchup
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard

Recipe Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 190°C / 375°F and line a baking tray with parchment. Unroll the crescent dough and press any seams flat into one sheet.
  2. Cut the dough into thin strips about 1 cm wide. If using cheese, lay a cheese strip along each hot dog first.
  3. Wrap each hot dog with dough strips, leaving a small gap near one end for the “face.” Overlap slightly so the bandages look layered, but do not cover the whole frank.
  4. Place on the tray, brush lightly with egg wash, and bake 13–16 minutes until the pastry is deep golden and puffed.
  5. While still warm, press on candy eyes (or pipe two mustard dots). For the spiderweb dip, smooth ketchup into a shallow bowl, pipe mustard rings, then drag a toothpick from the centre outward.

Tips & Variations

  • Use a dough sheet if you can — fewer seams means cleaner mummy wraps.
  • Mini cocktail sausages make bite-size mummies; bake 10–12 minutes.
  • Keep leftover mummy dogs warm at 90°C / 200°F, uncovered, so the pastry stays crisp.
