Celebrate your pup’s special day with this easy homemade Dog Birthday Cake. Made with just 7 simple ingredients, this peanut butter and carrot cake is a fun and dog-friendly treat that’s perfect for birthdays, gotcha days, or any celebration.
Last week was Duke’s 8th birthday, and there was no way we were going to let the day pass without a proper cake and a little celebration for him.
I used many of the same ingredients that I regularly use in homemade dog treats, added freshly shredded carrots, and the cake came together quickly. You can bake it in either a round cake pan or a loaf pan. I chose a loaf pan, shaped the finished cake into a bone, and spread a little natural peanut butter on top for a simple dog-friendly “frosting.”
What Is a Dog Birthday Cake?
Just as the name suggests, a dog birthday cake is a homemade cake created especially for your furry friend. It’s a fun way to celebrate your dog’s birthday, Gotcha Day, half-birthday, or simply spoil them with a special homemade treat.
You might be wondering why you should bake a dog birthday cake instead of buying one from the store. The reason is simple—most store-bought cakes are made for people and may contain ingredients that aren’t suitable for dogs. Unless you’re purchasing from a pet bakery that specializes in dog-friendly treats, making your own cake gives you complete control over the ingredients, so you know exactly what your pup is enjoying.
Safety First
When making a homemade dog birthday cake, it’s important to choose ingredients that are safe for your pup. Some foods that are perfectly fine for people can be harmful to dogs and should always be left out of homemade treats.
Avoid using ingredients such as:
Key Ingredients You’ll Need
Whole Wheat Flour
Forms the base of the cake, giving it structure while offering more nutrients and fiber than regular all-purpose flour.
Natural Peanut Butter or Almond Butter
Use a natural peanut butter made with only peanuts, or an almond butter made with just almonds. Always check the label to make sure it contains no added sweeteners or artificial ingredients.
Vegetable Oil
Helps keep the cake soft, moist, and easy for your dog to enjoy.
Honey
Adds a touch of natural sweetness without making the cake overly sugary.
Shredded Carrots
Fresh carrots add moisture, natural sweetness, plus a boost of fiber and vitamins, making this cake even more delicious for your pup.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare the pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8-inch round cake pan or an 8×4-inch loaf pan and set it aside.
Mix the dry ingredients
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and baking soda until well combined.
Add the wet ingredients
Stir in the peanut butter, vegetable oil, honey, shredded carrots, and egg.
Combine the batter
Using a wooden spoon or rubber spatula, mix everything together until the batter is smooth and fully combined.
Bake
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick or knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool and decorate
Let the cake cool completely before spreading a thin layer of natural peanut butter over the top as a simple dog-friendly frosting.
Full Cake vs. Pupcakes
Want to turn this recipe into adorable pupcakes instead? Simply grease a muffin tin, fill each cup about two-thirds full, and bake for 18–22 minutes. Depending on the size of your muffin pan, you’ll get approximately 9 to 12 pupcakes.
For a fun presentation, you can also bake the batter in a dog bone-shaped cake pan, making it easy to create a themed birthday cake without trimming or carving. Another great option is a paw print cake pan, which gives your homemade dog cake an extra festive touch for your pup’s special day.
Frosting the Cake
One of the most enjoyable parts of making a homemade dog birthday cake is decorating it! Whether you keep it simple or make it extra special, these easy frosting ideas are perfect for your pup’s celebration.
Peanut Butter Frosting
Spread a thin layer of natural peanut butter over the top and sides of the cake for a quick, dog-friendly frosting that's sure to be a favorite.
Cream Cheese or Yogurt Frosting
For a lighter option, mix one package of low-fat cream cheese or plain yogurt with 1 tablespoon of honey until smooth, then spread it over the cooled cake before serving.
Decorating Ideas
Once you’ve chosen your frosting, it’s time to have fun decorating your dog’s birthday cake. You can keep it simple or get creative by designing the cake around your pup’s favorite toys, shapes, or activities.
Here are a few fun ideas to inspire you:
Dog Bone
Bake the cake in a dog bone-shaped pan, or carve a loaf cake into a bone shape and finish it with a layer of peanut butter frosting.
Paw Print
Use a paw print cake pan, or decorate a round cake by piping a simple paw print design with your favorite dog-friendly frosting.
Tennis Ball
Frost a round cake with cream cheese or yogurt frosting tinted with a pet-safe yellow food coloring, then add curved lines to resemble a tennis ball.
Frisbee
Color the cream cheese or yogurt frosting using a pet-safe food coloring and decorate a round cake with circular lines around the edges to give it the look of a frisbee.
Storage Tips
Want to make this dog birthday cake ahead of time? No problem! Follow these simple storage tips to keep it fresh until it’s time to celebrate.
Unfrosted Cake
Wrap the cooled cake tightly in plastic wrap and store it at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Peanut Butter Frosting
If you've frosted the cake with natural peanut butter, keep it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Cream Cheese or Yogurt Frosting
Cakes topped with cream cheese or yogurt frosting should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
