Spooky Spiderweb Pizza with olive spiders

What You Need

  • 1 lb (450 g) store-bought pizza dough, at room temperature
  • ½ cup (120 ml) pizza sauce
  • 2 cups (200 g) shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese
  • 8 oz (225 g) fresh mozzarella, cut into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ¼ cup sliced black olives (for the spiders)
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal or flour, for dusting

How To Make It

  1. Heat the oven. Preheat to 475°F (245°C) with a pizza stone, steel, or inverted baking sheet inside for at least 20 minutes — a screaming-hot surface is the secret to a crisp crust.
  2. Shape the dough. On a lightly floured surface, stretch the dough into a 12-inch round. Transfer to parchment paper dusted with cornmeal.
  3. Sauce and cheese. Spread the pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a ½-inch border. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly, drizzle with olive oil, then season with garlic powder and Italian seasoning.
  4. Pipe the spiderweb. Lay the fresh mozzarella strips on top in a web pattern: 8 straight “spokes” radiating from the center, then 2–3 curved arcs connecting them in rings.
  5. Add the spiders. Build little spiders from the olive slices — one halved slice for the body and thin slices fanned out as the 8 legs. Scatter them over the web.
  6. Bake. Slide the pizza (on the parchment) onto the hot stone and bake 12–14 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly. Rest 2 minutes, slice, and serve.

Tips & Variations

  • Room-temp dough is everything. Cold dough snaps back when you stretch it — give it 30 minutes on the counter first.
  • Keep the web thin. Thick mozzarella strips melt into one cheesy blob. Thin strips hold the web shape.
  • Mini spiderweb pizzas: split the dough into 4 and let each kid build their own web — the messier, the spookier.
  • Make ahead: stretch and top the pizza up to 4 hours early, refrigerate uncovered, and bake right before the party.
  • Cheesy crust upgrade: roll string cheese into the edge of the dough before baking.
